I grew up with Ripley’s Believe It Or Not as one of my favorite Sunday comics. Little tickled me more than reading of:
- In 1923, jockey Frank Hayes won a race at Belmont Park in New York despite being dead — he suffered a heart attack mid-race, but his body stayed in the saddle until his horse crossed the line for a 20–1 outsider victory.
- The Dance Fever of 1518 was a month-long plague of inexplicable dancing in Strasbourg, in which hundreds of people danced for about a month for no apparent reason. Several of them danced themselves to death.
- In 2014, a missing woman on vacation in Iceland was found when it was discovered that she was in the search party looking for herself.
I could go on.
But today, what if we make up weird things rather than record weird things that have already happened.
So to begin with, take 5 minutes and write out a list of weird things that you wish would happen. Or weird things that you hope don't happen.
When you finish, put that aside and go for a walk outdoors. Look for the weirdest thing you see. Let it sink into your mind. Then come back inside and write for 30 minutes using anything from your list of before and whatever weird thing you discovered outdoors.
Have fun.
