WOW First Sunday

Wide Open Writing

WOW First Sunday welcomes Julia McDonald

How do you describe the sound of loons to someone who has never heard their call? What does wasabi feel like in your nose?

Vivid descriptions bring new ideas and places to life in readers’ minds. Each of us contains a multitude of sensory experiences – and we are the only ones in the universe with that specific lived knowledge. How do we transport our readers into our world? Judicious use of evocative details are like splashes of color or dashes of spice in our stories. In this workshop, participants will use writing tips and a series of prompts to practice descriptive writing that will elevate any genre of writing: from non-fiction or memoir to fantasy or fiction.
